Abstract
The fabrication of an improvised bicycle disc brake system was studied in this research. Experiment will also be carried out to test whether the new fabricated disc brake does increase the braking performance. The main parameters in this project are the design of disc brake, dimension of disc brake, material of disc brake and the temperature of the disc brake. The findings of this project will answer the problem statement of the inefficiency of braking performance of a disc brake that have become the norm of bicycle braking system. The goals of this project are to improve the braking performance of disc brakes to have better friction performance while retaining its simple design, manufacturing and concept through modifications of design and material. Moreover, through this study, the factor that cause loss of braking power overtime will also be investigated and ways to overcome it. Experimental measurement and theoretical analysis will be used throughout this project. The experimental measurement is used to obtain the distance needed for the bicycle to stop completely and comparing it with the original disc brake while theoretical analysis will be used to determine which material is more suitable to be used as the disc brake material. The brake disc was created and tested. The result and the deceleration for the improved brake disc is 3.10m/s2 during normal conditions, 3.72m/s2 when the brake disc is hot and -3.97m/s2 during poor conditions.
