Abstract

Badminton is one of the most popular sports around the globe. It is a sport that demands strong physical condition and synchronisation between various human body parts since it involves multiples lateral movements during the game. Lateral movements, or footwork is considered as one of a badminton player’s most crucial skills for achieving successful games. These highintensity movements require the heavy use of multiple lower-body components such as the leg muscles and joints. It is generally believed that serious injuries might come from joint tension and overloading of force. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to evaluate the force and stress exerted on the joints of the lower-extremities throughout the lateral movements in badminton via biomechanical analysis. Video analysis with proper annotations will be conducted in order to capture the subject’s movement pattern throughout the entire lateral movement. Then, further calculations will be performed to collect the kinetic data on the lower-limb of the subject during the entire motion by converting and analysing the lower-limbs of the subject via mechanical model. Therefore, by implementing engineering knowledge, the forces acting on the knee and the ankle joint during the lateral movement can be obtained, thus the risk of injuries can be further evaluated in future studies.
