Abstract
Achieving high precision of surface finish value in micrometre could be challenging in current development of ball nose end mills on STAVAX stainless steel. In this study, it is aimed to discover the significant machining parameters that possess the possibility on affecting the surface roughness of STAVAX workpiece. Tool wear, which acts as an important element in end milling are investigated. Based on previous research, it is known that surface roughness in micro milling of STAVAX material is stochastic due to uncertainties, and this behaviour becomes more obvious when the diameter of the cutting tool increases, resulting in poor surface finish. Besides, a statement by previous research regarding increasing feed rate should produce better surface finish was validated experimentally as well. This study covers the reviews of several previous research on various ball nose end mill cutting tool geometries, cutting feed rate, and their effects on the surface finish of STAVAX material. To validate the reviewed topics, experiments are carried out on ball nose end mills using a 5 axis CNC machine.
