Abstract

The sandwich composite plate is usually made by two or more distinct flat sheet materials with varied mechanical properties. The dynamic behaviour of the structure can be improved with well-designed of face sheet and core. The main objective of this paper is analysing and studying the use of sandwich composite plate with honeycomb core structure that can be used in the aircraft structure in term of vibration analysis. Parametric investigations such thickness, shape and height of the core cell were carried out for determine the natural frequencies and total deformation value of the composite sandwich plates. The two type of honeycomb core study in this paper are regular and auxetic honeycomb core in between two face sheets were made of aluminium alloy (AA3003). With undergoing the analysis of the regular honeycomb core together with the auxetic honeycomb core, the weakest and the limitation of each type of core together with various parameter design can be spotted and identify so that the further improvement can be carried out for achieve the better performance. Based on the comparison between the regular and auxetic honeycomb core structure with different parametric design of core and face sheet, the overall performance of the auxetic honeycomb core show similar properties as the regular honeycomb core in term of natural frequency and total deformation. However, it experienced a reduction of 1% to 20% in natural frequency when the same parameter setting for regular core switch to auxetic core. This percentage of reduction is acceptable for the application such as fuselages and duct liners which them does not required high natural frequency as design concern but they required the auxetic structure that provide high stiffness ratios which able to give out some improvement for impact resistant, energy absorption capabilities, sound reduction capabilities and sound transmission properties for medium and high range of frequencies. While for the total deformation caused by the natural frequency show a percentage of reduction of 10.22% to 45.75%. This is because the auxetic honeycomb core offer more rigid cell structure as their center empty area smaller than regular core cell. In nutshell, the auxetic honeycomb core can be study and analysed for applied it for the sandwich panel application field that have primary concern about impact and energy absorption capabilities according to the study. While the regular honeycomb core can be study and analysed for used in the application that required high stiffness to weights capabilities.
