Abstract

This solar still project aims to address the issue of water scarcity in remote and arid areas by developing a sustainable solution for water management. A passive solar distillation system with an addition of vacuum pump is designed and implemented in which the system can utilizes solar energy to evaporate and condense clean drinkable water at the existence of sunlight. The project is carried out in Malaysia, hence the inclination angle is set at 5 degree. The inclination angle is actually depending on the latitude of that particular country. There is a limit for the volume of freshwater generated as the project designed is small and the capacity or the chamber is not large enough to house many liters of water. Large design of the solar still and more powerful of vacuum pump must be used to produce even more liters of freshwater per day to achieve the daily consumption of the individuals. On top of that, the system must be ensured to be sealed completely in order to prevent air leaked and hence affect the overall pressure when the vacuum pump is operating. The working principle of the vacuum pump is by means of lowering the pressure within the chamber, water will evaporate and condense to form fresh water droplets. The solar still project has the potential to improve water access and qualityin remote and arid areas, contributing to the achievement of sixth of the Sustainable Development Goal which is ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for all.
