Abstract
The surge in popularity of indoor plants, valued for their aesthetic and health benefits, presents a challenge in maintaining their optimal care. Factors like variable lighting, limited natural rainfall, and the potential for human error make manual plant care methods inconsistent and time-consuming. As a result, there is a pressing need for an automated watering and fertilising system tailored to indoor plants. This project aims to design and construct a reliable and efficient automated watering and fertilising system, evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the automated system in maintaining optimal plant health and growth and optimise the automated system for scalability, adaptability, and ease of use. The system leverages advanced sensor technologies, microcontroller-based automation, and intelligent scheduling algorithms to deliver water and nutrients to plants in a controlled and optimised manner. Key components of the system include capacitive soil moisture sensors for real-time monitoring of soil moisture levels, micro submersible water pumps for dispensing of water and fertilisers, microcontroller with timer for precise scheduling of watering and fertilising events, water level sensor for monitoring the water in the water tank. The system’s user-friendly interface allows for easy configuration of plant-specific parameters and monitoring of system status. Additionally, the system is designed with scalability in mind, allowing for expansion to accommodate varying plant types and growth stages. This report documents the design, development, and implementation of the system, encompassing detailed system architecture and component selection. Furthermore, it discusses the ethical considerations surrounding the project, including plant welfare, environmental impact, and user safety.
