Abstract
The fuzzy controller is widely applied and developed in the recent year. Many engineering applications have implemented fuzzy controller to enhancing the system performance. Ride comfort is an important consideration when rating an overall performance of a passenger car. Therefore, a proper controlled semi-active suspension system is important for optimal ride comfort. This research aims to investigate the application of self-tuning fuzzy PI-PD (STFPI-PD) controller in a semi-active suspension system. In this research, the Magnetorheological (MR) damper is implemented in a quarter car model as a quarter semi-active suspension system. The ride comfort improvement of STFPI-PD controlled quarter suspension is analyzed and compared with other controllers which are PID, PI-PD and self-tuning PID (STFPID) controller. The average improvement of STFPI-PD in semi-active suspension is 13.5% under speed bump test, which is worse than PID and PI-PD by 4.5% but better than STFPID controller by 0.4%. The implementation of STFPI-PD in semi-active suspension system still require further improvement for practical application.
