Abstract

The project presents a computational investigation of the turbulent flow in the suction pipe. In this project, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of fully developed turbulent flow in a complex long pipe is implemented with the help of ANSYS FLUENT 17.2 software. The variation of axial velocity and pressure and the skin friction coefficient in suction pipe are analyzed. Besides, cavitation is observed and identified in the transient pipe flows. Furthermore, cavitation and piping layout have been studied in order to understand the relationship between them in turbulent flow. Cavitation in pipes is the main concern of this experiment, and by the help of CFD analysis package Fluent, the points of happening cavitation are analyzed, and several improvements are recommended. Last but not least, the CFD simulation method is understood for proper selection of grid structures, turbulence models and the solution methods.
