Abstract

This project aimed to design, build, and test a prototype automated rotary jet head for tank cleaning to minimize water usage and manual operation. The methodology involved fabricating a system with four angled nozzles and a planetary gear mechanism, powered by a standard residential water supply. The prototype was tested across various pressure settings to measure flow rate and performance. Results successfully demonstrated the generation of high-velocity water jets (up to 40 m/s), validating the fundamental fluid dynamics principle of jet thrust. However, the prototype failed to achieve rotation due to excessive frictional losses and mechanical resistance caused by the weight of the galvanized iron construction. The study concludes that while the hydraulic principle is sound, achieving rotation requires a future design iteration using lightweight materials to reduce inertia and friction. This project provides practical insight into the challenges of translating theoretical fluid mechanics into a functional mechanical system
