Abstract

This project presents the design and development of a pedal-powered USB Type-C phone charger that integrates mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion, power regulation and storage. The system harnesses human pedalling to drive a DC motor functioning as a generator, with the produced electrical energy conditioned through rectification, buck/boost conversion and buffering. To ensure stable and safe charging, a battery management system (BMS) is employed, alongside protection features against over-voltage, over-current, and short circuits. A real-time LED display allows users to monitor voltage, current, and power output, while experimental testing validates charging performance under different pedalling conditions. The charger demonstrates cost-effectiveness by utilizing readily available components, promotes sustainability by reducing reliance on grid electricity, and offers educational value in understanding renewable energy generation. This innovative design highlights a practical, portable and eco-friendly charging solution suitable for cyclists, students and communities in both urban and off-grid environments
