Abstract

This project is aiming to design and develop an automated recycling bin that can sort the plastic, paper and glass automatically. The automated recycling bin uses sliding gate mechanism to sort the different wastes in to plastic, paper and glass categories. The system uses a Near- Infrared sensor to detect the type of material based on the reflectance values. An Arduino microcontroller processes the sensor data and controls a servo motor that operates the sliding flap to direct the waste into the correct bin. The entire system is low-cost, energy-efficient and built with safe and recyclable materials. The bin is designed to operate in public spaces such as schools, offices or homes. The proposed system contributes to better recycling practices, reduces landfill waste and supports the environmental sustainability goals. The experimental results demonstrate that the automated recycling bin successfully classifies plastic, paper, metal and glass with high accuracy and consistent performance. Additionally, the prototype operates with minimal power consumption, showing the practicality for real-world applications. In conclusion, the developed automated recycling bin provides a simple, effective and sustainable solution to improve waste management practices. By promoting proper waste segregation, the system helps reduce landfill waste, enhance recycling efficiency and support environmental sustainability goals
