Abstract
This project aims to develop a low-cost smart irrigation system enabled by the Internet of Things, to facilitate better water management in agriculture. The smart irrigation system combines soil moisture sensors, climate sensors, an ESP8266 microcontroller, a relay module, and a water pump, to initiate and run all automation for irrigation of agriculture, even remotely possible. Based on the readings, the ESP8266 will process the sensor data and send the readings using a Wi-Fi connection to the Blynk IoT platform to view real-time on a smartphone to monitor. If it is not connected to the internet, a local LCD display will provide feedback. The design of this project is low-cost, user-friendly, and scalable, and intended for smallholder farmers, educational purposes, or research purposes. The system will conserve water and require no manual intervention for the irrigation process, as the irrigation activation will be initiated automatically when the soil moisture drops below a certain threshold. This project provides a low barrier to access a model for smart farming, as well as assisting with the continual effort to achieve sustainability and SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation throughout the world
