Abstract

The purpose of this project is to bring in a new concept of hydroelectric power plant into Malaysia as Malaysia has a lot of river with high flowrate. It is by using partial of river flowrate flowing into a rotating tank with a center hole at the bottom where the flow is discharge there. This will form a water vortex where rotation power that can be harvest. A turbine is put into the vortex to harvest the energy. This new energy is a new type of green energy. Comparing to dam, the construction of the water vortex power plant is smaller and much simple. The cost of construction is low too and much more environmental friendly compare with the dam. The study of this project related to fluid mechanic, rotation mechanism and turbine. Research and reading had been done from internets, journals and college library books are used. This project consists of two parts which is the apparatus to generate the free water vortex and the turbine system to harvest the energy from the free water vortex. The objective of this project is to design and fabricate an experimental apparatus to form the free water vortex using a pump act as the river flow. It also need to prove that the free water vortex have enough power to generated power. The next objective is to determine the factor that will affect the power output generated by the free water vortex. Finally, study the shape and the strength of the free water vortex with different condition.
