Abstract

This project is a group project. The aim of the project is to design a sports car from ground-up and only using donor car parts. The project breaks into three parts: l) Chassis and Suspension Design 2) Component Integration 3) Aerodynamics and Stability. I am responsible for Chassis and Suspension design. My job is to design a spaceframe chassis and build the design. My part of the project requires gathering anthropometry data, major mountings measurements and engine measurements. I also set key parameters (e.g.: wheelbase, track, total height, ground clearance) before beginning the design process. All these data will lead to the general shape of the chassis. Then, the general shape of the chassis is further improvised to accommodate the designs of Aerodynamic and Stability and Component Integration. Since it is a spaceframe that uses members welded together, I decide to use SolidWorks 2010. This software has a feature that allows engineers to design weldmets from line drawings. This makes spaceframe design easy and quick. During the design process, the chassis is tested in Simulation to find design faults and improvements as well as material selection. We made full use of CAE and FEA. Although we could not complete the car due to time, cost and technical constraints, we could still exhibit a non-functional car standing on its own to exhibit our concept and out work.
