Abstract

Aware of the escalating water pollutions in Malaysia, this project is aim to create a drone that can collect pollutants from water. Current state design is focused on the solid pollutants floating on water surface. This water drone can collects every floating trash on its pathway as it moves on the polluted water. Plastic debris and trashes are often claimed to be chemically and physically harmful to the marine ecosystem and environment. Thus, this project has the objectives to send awareness to the public about the pollutions of water. The water drone designed in this project has the capabilities to collects the solid pollutants on water surfaces using its own filtering systems based on simple fluid mechanics. Moreover, it can operate in autonomous and manual mode during the cleaning process. By applying engineering skills and knowledge in this project, the water drone can clean up to 77% of the pollutants from water surfaces in a single operation. With low cost material and fabrication, this water drone can withstand high collision and pressure impact on it without breaking apart. This fact ensures that this prototype can operate in real water environment that has multiple harsh conditions, such as rocks and water streams. There is four main parts on this drone, which are the filter, motor drive, electronic components and debris trap. Every part has its own functions and interactions of every parts form a complete water drone. This dissertation will overview every process of this project, includes the planning, designing, fabricating and testing. It took two semester period and a lot of efforts in order to produce this prototype at the end of the project. Besides that, there is a merge with another project, and this partnership has finalised this water drone to be the solution to the water pollution.
