Abstract

Turning and repositioning bed is a device that helps care taker or nurse turn a patient easily and comfortably. The device can be controlled by pressing the buttons on a panel or to use a remote control provided. The device must be operated with the aid of the care taker, the device is able to turn the patient from lying on their back to right side or left side with apply of log roll technique. The device also can be used to reposition the patient to the centre of the bed after the turning. The purpose of this project is to design a turning and repositioning bed for patient. There are three stages of job scope in this project. The first scope of project is the detail design of the device which included mechanical part (side rail and roller design) and electrical part (electrical circuit design). The fabrication of the prototype is the second stage of the project. In this stage, all the components and materials were assembled and integrated according to the design. After the fabrication stage, the test and modification were done in order to improve the performance of the prototype. This device is aimed at turning and repositioning a patient of weight up to 100 kg to lateral, prone or supine position and moving the patient from one side of the bed to the other side. For a user of above 100 kg, motor with higher torque can be replaced as stated in this dissertation. The author has in charge of the positioning control mechanism which includes the electrical circuit design and all the calculations that needed to take into consideration. The design concept is to build side rails with motor on a piece of plywood which can be placed on any ordinary single bed. Survey has been carried out to check the marketability and the responses are encouraging. The cost of the products was estimated as RM 1700, which is within the preferred affordable price through the survey. The turning bed has been successfully designed, fabricated and tested with user. All objectives have been achieved within the given time frame. Further improvements are more focus on the combination of device with others function device like Hoyer Lift that can transfer patient from bed to the wheel chair and to enhance the strength of the structure by modification in the design.
