Abstract

Nowadays, transit motor buses are an integral part of the national transportation system. According to the National Transportation Statistics from 1990 to 2002, the number of transit motor buses in United States has increased 30 percent. Therefore buses are one of the most safety transportation but occupant injuries and fatalities in bus crashes caused by suspension system. Suspension system selection has become an important issue for bus, coach manufacturers and passengers. In this thesis were discuss the concept of air suspension system bus and leaf suspension systems, the safety of brackets in air suspension system, and analysis to compare within leaf spring suspension system and air spring suspension system. The analysis model was validated for the motion analysis test carried according to the standard bus model that approved by Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia of Sijil Timbang Berat. The Solidworks software was used to draw all components of the bus. Besides that, the bus acceleration and velocity with the ground after impact and harmonic forces were measured in COSMOSMotion software. The differences between leaf spring suspension system and air spring suspension system tests will be discussed.
