Abstract

The literature review was done in this project. Some research about the ceramic and the processes was searched from the literature review session such as the application of ceramic, dopant materials used on Y-TZP, sample preparation procedures and etc. from the previous investigation, the dopant materials such as cerium, alumina, hydroxyapatite, manganese and etc. do enhanced the mechanical properties of ceramic materials. Thus, in this present work, two dopant materials (cerium and manganese) were selected to enhance the mechanical properties of Y-TZP. First of all, the samples of the CeO and MnO doped Y-TZP and undoped Y-TZP were formed through several processes including ultrasonication, ball milling, pressing, sintering, grinding and polishing. After that, the samples of doped and undoped Y-TZP were undergo some mechanical properties testing which include the bulk density testing and Vickers hardness testing. The mechanical properties of the CeO and MnO doped Y-TZP with different weight percentage varied from 0.5 to 1.5 wt% were investigated. The samples were pressed uniaxially at 200 MPa into circular disc shaped and pressureless-sintered at the temperature ranging between 1250°C to 1450°C for 5 hours. The mechanical properties in terms of bulk density and Vickers hardness for both doped and undoped Y-TZPs were measured. The results indicate that the addition of dopants (CeO and MnO) do strengthen the mechanical properties on the undoped Y-TZP
