Abstract

The main objective of this project is to produce a cast iron by using scrap steel and detennine the mechanical properties and microstructure of cast iron made from scrap metal subjected to solidification in a horizontal sand mould. The reason of producing cast iron by using scrap steels instead of pig iron is to recycle the scrap products. Based on the 3R's of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle concepts, this will lead to savings in materials and energy which will benefit the environment. The design of the test specimen pattern is constructed using SolidWork software. By using SolidWork software, 2D and 3D view of the test specimen pattern and final casting can be shown. In order to produce cast iron, there are 2 elements needed to be concerned: carbon and silicon content. Flake graphite and silicon ore is the main factor to control the carbon and silicon content. This dissertation discusses the design and making of the test specimen pattern, the way to produce cast iron by using the college furnaces, and the testing results from the horizontal sand mould casting.
