Abstract

The main purpose of this project is to study the effectiveness of hot dipped galvanized coating, blue and rainbow zinc electroplating coating on constmction of water storage tank. Besides that, this project is also carried out to determine the suitability of the various kind of coating in different kind of solution and their corrosion behavior. In this project, salt spray testing and immersion test in HCI solution, NaOH solution and tap water were carried out to determine the corrosion rates and suitability in the respective solution. Besides that, Vicker's hardness tests were also carried out to determine the changes of hardness before and after corrosion. A quantitative analysis using optical emission spectrometer was also carried out to determine the composition of the mild steel specimen. Microstructure analyses of the coated and uncoated control specimen were observed to determine the changes in microstructures before and after the corrosion occur. Overall, the results obtained were analyzed and discussed. The factors affecting the outcomes from the project were determined and discussed to improve the performance of the coating. The conclusion on the suitability and effectiveness of the various kind of coating to be applied on the water storage tank were also done. Finally, the recommendations for future work were done.
