Abstract

This project presents the design of fluidic binary adder, a circuit that performs the addition of binary numbers similar to the adder in electronic devices such as computers or other kinds of processors. But instead of using electricity, air is used as the medium in this project. Although a fluidic binary adder has the same function as an electronic binary adder, the flow circuit is different and it has to be designed based on the fluid flow phenomena. The flow circuit of this binary adder is created based on the principle of fluidics, using fluidic components (design input) such as monostable amplifier, bistable amplifier, and logic gates. Bistable amplifier that depends on wall attachment effect (also known as Coanda effect), is designed based on the main parameters experimented in the past researches and is simulated in SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation to show the “Coanda effect” and its reliability. The design output of this project is the flow circuit of the fluidic binary adder, which the logic of this fluidic binary adder is justified by demonstrating using animation, slides, as well as truth table. The output of this project is useful to be implemented in spacecraft, where the weight of the equipment is one of the crucial factors to be considered in rocket engineering.
