Abstract

The objective of this project is to study the effect of adding eggshell powder (ESP) into polyethylene (LDPE) and natural rubber (SMRL). The processing torque required to form LDPE/ESP compound had been determined with Brabender Plasticorder. The result shows that the processing torque increased at 0.25Nm per percentage of weight composition of ESP added, this result also compared to the processing torque commercial calcium carbonate. No physical properties of LDPE/ESP compound had been determined due to the testing specimens produced were full with bubble which will act as stress concentration point and cause inaccuracy of the result. For SMRL/ESP, the compound was undergo rheometer analysis to determine the scorch time and curing time. The scorch time shows a very minor decreasing trend but curing time shows a more significant decreasing trend when the filler loading increased. MH of the SMRL/ESP compound increased as the amount of ESP added increased. The specimen was then undergoes thermal aging. Tensile test was carried on for both before and after thermal aged specimens. From the results obtained, it shows that M300 and M600 were gradually increased as the filler loading increased as compared to original specimens. Changes of modulus after thermal aging also had been calculated, the changes for both M30() and M600 were found stable at low filler loading which less than 15 phr, however at higher filler loading which more than 15 phr, the modulus of thermal aged specimens increased. Due to the failure of the tensile test machine (gripping tools), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation at break couldn't be obtained.
