Abstract

This is a prototyping project for design and fabrication of a biogas digester experimental rig. The objective of this project is to collect and test the methane gas content whether it can be burned. This would be a benefit to the low income family own a mini biogas digester than a large biogas digester. In the study of biogas production, with the mixture of organic waste and the water, it would produce a gas called as methane gas for cooking or electrical purposes. Different organic waste gives different amount of biogas yield which would influence the time limit to let electrical or cooking in long term. During the process of fabricating and designing the prototype, there are a few of method is needed for completing the prototype. Method of joining is the critical part which would influence the final result. If the joins is not connected tightly or perfectly, the gasses produce from the organic waste would be lost and get nothing at the final stage. Therefore, patience is needed and measurement of the parts is needed in order to let make a successful prototype. After the fabrication is done, the prototype is under process of producing gasses and waiting to be tested. The information and the result from the prototype are used for modification. If there are any problems found, the prototype will undergo some troubleshooting and redo for evaluation again. Overall, the objectives of the project are achieved. A low cost biogas digester is build and the gas is fully filling the old tire tube. It is later being tested and ignited by the lighter to show the collected gas is flammable. A transparent blue flame is seen and future work with organic waste as the content of producing biogas is chosen. The efficiency of anaerobic digestion essentially depends on intensity of bacterial activity, which is influenced by several factors such as ambient temperature, temperature of digester material, loading rate, retention time, and pH value of digester content.
