Abstract

Irregular student attendance has been a main concern for most education institutions. Being absent can affect the academic performance of the student. However, the conventional method of attendance recording system is inefficient. Conventional methods include calling out of names or signing on an attendance sheet. Such approach is unreliable, time consuming and insecure. Hence, a computer-based student attendance system is needed to help institutions to analyze the attendance of their students. This project aims to use RFID to record the attendance of the students. Although the usage of RFID systems is not a new approach, it is intended to show how such system can be used to solve a crucial problem in our university – Tunku Abdul Rahman University College. The system uses a low-cost RFID reader, open source microcontroller, Wi-Fi connection, an open source database and also a popular software for graphical user interface and powerful data analytical tool – Microsoft Excel. This system is designed based on the current practice and available devices in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College. Therefore, there will be a low switching cost should there be a move to implement this system in the university college.
