Abstract

According to the housebreaking crime index provided by Bernama newspaper dated 26th March 2016, there are a total of 5,702 cases were reported between January and June in this year against 5,043 cases in 2015 for the same period in Malaysia. This increase of crime rate and housebreaking cases in our country has led to the increasing number of people to become cautious of the safety and placement of their valuable belongings such as gold, jewellery, important documents and more at home. To resolve this issue, some organizations such as the bank companies have tried to make continuous efforts to provide a safer and reliable locker facility with enhanced security system to the public for the storage of their valuable belongings. In this project, a locker security system based on biometric and GSM technology is designed and implemented to help improving the security of a locker system. The components used to construct the system in this project are 4 x 4 keypad, buzzer, web camera, GSM SIM900a, Mbed LPC1768, LED display and other electronic devices. On the other hand, the design of locker’s security system is divided into four main processes which are the identification of password using Mbed microprocessor, face recognition system, the sending of verification code using GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology to the user if the face detection matches and the identification of verification code to unlock the locker system. In the first process, a face recognition system is a computer application capable of identifying users’ face features to match with the images that pre-stored in the database. OpenCV in Visual Studio 2015 is a type of the programming language that is used to write a face recognition operation. In face detection process, a webcam is employed in the system to capture the image of the authentic user and if an individual face detect is matched with the database. If the face detection is matched, OpenCV will send a signal to the Mbed LPC1768 to prompt password verification. Mbed C++ language is used to operate the Mbed microprocessor to read and write from the computer as the password is entered through a 4 x 4 keypad by the users for password verification. If the password is authenticated, a verification code will then be sent through GSM SIM900a to the user’s mobile phone. GSM technology is a standard for digital cellular technology used by mobile phones for transmitting mobile data. If the verification code entered by the user to the computer is correct, the security system of the locker will unlock the locker. If the face detection is unmatched to the image database or the identification of verification code is invalid, the alarm will ring and trigger the red LED lights to blink. Based on these experimental results, it is found that the bank locker with integration of the face detection and GSM technology can provide a high level of security if compared to the conventional security system.
