Abstract

The number of cars in the city is increasing day by day and the traffic of the city is getting worse. Finding a parking space is a major problem faced by drivers in the city. The solution proposed in this project is to develop a camera based parking space locator system and a mobile app, which named as Smart Parking Space Locator. In this project, computer vision is used in the system to identify the parking space and check the availability of the parking spaces. OpenCV is the library of computer vision used to develop the image processing part of the system. A MySQL database server is also be setup in a Raspberry Pi embedded computer as a server to store the information of the system. The mobile application is developed using Apache Cordova, which is a cross platform mobile application development framework. By implementing this system in parking area, the owners of parking area can have lower maintenance cost compare to sensors based parking system, and easier to manage parking area and avoid congested situation in the parking. Drivers that use the mobile app will also can get the immediate information of the parking area, such as the number of available parking spaces left and the location of available parking space. Therefore, driver can save their time and money by using this mobile app to get the parking space directly and faster.
