Abstract

The project title is “Intelligent Energy Saver Using Ultra Smooth Power Controller”. This is a research-based project which uses microcontroller technology to detect the amount of human activities in a closed area such as room or hall, and automatically adjust the power consumption to be delivered to the loads in the closed area so as to reduce the monthly electricity bill. As a thumb of rule, the lesser the human activities in the closed area, the more power consumption will be reduced and vice versa. Reduction of power consumption is achieved through altering the waveform of the 50Hz mains by using microcontroller. This project comprises a webcam, motion sensors, sound sensors, and vibration sensors for human activity detection. The loads to be controlled by the system are light bulb, fan, and heater. The objectives of this project are 1. To design a smart energy saver prototype which could automatically and intelligently adjust the power consumption according to the amount of human activities in a closed area, such as a room, hall, library, hospital or canteen. 2. To derive suitable human activity algorithm for electrical energy management. 3. To develop an ultra-smooth power controllers to ensure the change of power supply level on demand is smooth at the load. 4. To increase the flexibility of the prototype by allowing users to override the power level at will. A PC (desktop computer or laptop) is used to send a signal to the human activity monitoring microcontroller which is connected to the PC via a USB to RS-232 cable when there is motion detected from the webcam. The PC is also used for energy consumption monitoring purpose. The energy consumption at the loads will be recorded and tracked by the microcontroller and to be displayed at the screen of the PC through a USB to RS-232 cable. Great Cow Basic software is used as the compiler of the program for the microcontroller which is written in BASIC language due to its superb features and performance which will be explained later in this thesis. In conclusion, the aim of this project is to develop an energy saver prototype which could automatically and smartly adjust the power consumption in a room/hall so as to overcome the ever rising cost of living. The prototype will be of great help ion lessening the financial burden of the Malaysians.
