Abstract

In this technology era, automatic gate is one of the common technology implements in every house. The purpose of this project is to build a prototype of an intelligent automatic gate as an upgrade version of the current automatic gate. The new system uses Wi-Fi, camera and smartphone to replace the remote control. The camera is used as the „eyes‟ of the system, when there is a vehicle stop at a specified region in front the camera and it will trigger the car number plate detection. Once the result obtained is a positive which mean there is a car number plate in front the camera and it will immediate perform the text recognition on the detected car number plate. The recognised text will compared to the number registered in the database before it open/close the gate. The details of the car will be recorded into database for the security purposes. Users are able to register their car number into the system through the smartphone application. With the help of the smartphone application users are also able to monitor the entry record for security purpose and also manually open or close the gate during emergency. Deep down into focus of this project, it can be further classified into 3 categories which is Main System Software, User-interface and Hardware prototype. The main system software is the combination of 3 main functions which is car number plate recognition, text recognition and also database. The car number plate recognition is done by image processing using OPENCV and the text recognition is done by using the Tesseract Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The database will host in a local server by using MySQL database. For the user-interface or mobile application, it is developed using PhoneGap Cordova, which is cross platform mobile application development kit. For the hardware prototype, it is developed using an Arduino Controller to control the open or close of the gate.
