Abstract

In this era of globalisation and modern technology, speech conversation has become a part and parcel of human daily routine. People have to converse in different types of languages, be it in English, Mandarin, Russian, Japanese, Korean, French or Spanish, either via smartphone, mobile phone, Skype, Facebook or other social media tools. One persistent problem that is frequently faced when performing remote communications via messaging devices is having to deal with inconsistent or non-constant audio volume when using loudspeakers on mobile phone or during video-conferencing, thus causing annoyance and uncomfortable to hearing. There could be many factors that can cause this problem, such as noise due to varying signal strength, presence of static noise in the background, different distances of between the microphone and the person talking, etc. The purpose of implementing Audio Automatic Gain Control System is to maintain the audio level at a reasonably constant level and remove any unwanted noise in the background. For this project, a complete audio processing system will be simulated and developed that implements an AGC algorithm to maintain the audio level at a fixed level settable by the user. This includes the design and development of AGC components, such as background noise filters, voice activity detectors, audio framing, calculation of frame energy and calculation of amount of gain to be applied. A MATLAB simulation and Graphical User Interface (GUI) will then be developed to investigate the performance of the AGC algorithm. If time and resources permit, the algorithm will then be implemented in a Digital Signal Processor (DSP), if one is available.
