Abstract

The objective of the project is to explore the transmission method of underwater communication. There are two main systems involved in this final year project which are underwater communication system using LED light transmission and ultrasonic system for searching flight data recorder (black box) to improve air disaster rescue and air travel safety. Underwater communication using LED light transmission is done by converting the audio signal into light signal before transmission. The receiver side uses a solar panel to convert the light signal back to audio signal. The type of the message signal can be in a form of text or music (voice). If the music is transmitted, the receiver can directly recover the music without any decoding system. If the text message is transmitted, the receiver needs to decode the received data back to text messages and display them on a computer screen. This system is very suitable for medium distance communication under the sea. The next system which uses ultrasonic technology is to improve the probability of searching the flight recorder after a flight accident happened. The system allows the flight recorder to keep sending out the last GPS location of the plane after the flight recorder is dropped into the sea. The ultrasonic system uses ultrasonic frequency pulses to represent the GPS data and continuously send out these pulses. The ultrasonic receiver on receiving these pulses decodes them back to GPS data to indicate the location of the flight recorder (black box). Therefore, once the black box signal is received, the location of the flight recorder can be confirmed and this would save a lot of time to search for the flight data recorder compared to the old version of flight data recorder which do not use GPS. Although the main target in this project is underwater text communication, underwater communication using voice is also attempted. A version of the ultrasonic system uses voice for communication is also explored and developed.
