Abstract

The primary objective of this project is to study the effect of masterbatch resin and the precoloured resin on quality of plastic product. A series of experiment had been designed and carried out in order to compare the mechanical properties of the masterbatch resin and the precoloured resin of Polypropylene (PP). Moreover, the colouring effect of the masterbatch and the thermal stability of the masterbatch resin and the precoloured resin had been investigated and compared. Physical and mechanical testings such as MFI testing, rheological testing, hardness testing, impact toughness testing and tensile testing were carried out in order to find out the effect of the masterbatch resin and precoloured resin on the quality of plastic product. Furthermore, the thermal aging and the artificial weathering process were carried to provide different test environment for the masterbatch resin and precoloured resin test specimen in order to further investigate the behaviour of the masterbatch resin and the precoloured resin under different test conditions. Based on the result obtained from the testing, the masterbatch resin brings a great effect on the mechanical properties compared to the precoloured resin. The pros and cons of using the masterbatch resin and the precoloured resin was deduced. In short, the general properties of the masterbatch resin were compared over the precoloured resin. In conclusion, the masterbatch resin has been observed to show different properties compared to the precoloured resin and a more precise result can be further investigated by using other colour masterbatch or recycled polymer instead.
