Abstract

Nowadays, waveguide is gaining its popularity as it can transmit the signal in a very high bandwidth compared to the ordinary copper wire. It is foreseen that circular waveguide will be widely used in the transmission system in the future. Hence, there is a need to carry out some investigation to understand the waveguide properties and perform some simulation on the field pattern of the waveguide in different modes. The studies of circular waveguide can lead to the studies of conical horn antenna. This project is divided into two sections, derivation of mathematical model of waveguide and simulation in MATLAB. First, the mathematical model will first be developed using the basic concept of Maxwell Equations. The equations of dielectric loaded waveguide can be obtained after considering the boundary conditions, the properties of electromagnetic field and some nature of the perfect conducting wall on the waveguide. With the model developed, the simulation is carried out using MATLAB to determine the cutoff frequency of different modes in the waveguide. The dispersion curves are then plotted with the program developed. The dispersion curves will show the dominant mode as well as the propagating modes in a particular frequency. The information simulated will be very useful especially in transmission system. Finally, another MATLAB program is developed to generate the field pattern of certain modes in the circular waveguide. It is observed that different propagating mode of waveguide will show a different field distribution pattern. Basically, the project is successfully completed as the objectives of this project have been achieved.
