Abstract

Recently, the musical film The Greatest Showman (2017) has swiped across the globe with its impressive box office result in many countries included Malaysia. Wondering about the absence of musical film genre in Malaysian local film history despite its popularity and referencing on the adoption of musical film production in Hollywood film arena, this research is conducted to look into the potential of the ideation of producing local Chinese musical film in Malaysia through the study on the local Chinese musical theatre practices and the perceptions of Malaysian Chinese young adults. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods have been applied in collecting the data for this research. Online questionnaire is used to study the perceptions of Malaysian Chinese young adults towards the ideation of producing local Chinese musical film in Malaysia. Besides, interview sessions have also been conducted with practitioners from Malaysian local musical theatre and local film industries. Through the interviews, they are mainly aimed to study how the practice of local Chinese musical theatre could be the resources for the ideation of producing local Chinese musical film in Malaysia and to study the potentials as well as challenges of the ideation. By combining the data obtained from both research methods, the research problem has been resolved with the conclusion that the ideation of producing local musical film is potential in Malaysia as the Malaysian Chinese young adults are having overall positive perceptions towards the ideation and the development of local Chinese musical theatre is able to aid the implementation of ideation through the experiences, usual practices as well as in terms of resources.
