Abstract

This study is examining the effectiveness of the local film locations in promoting the tourism among the Malaysian youths. The research consisted with a total of 205 students and working youth respondents participated in the online survey questionnaire as well as the intensive interviews with two interviewees from the film and tourism industries. The research is firstly aimed to investigate the role of the local film locations in promoting local tourism among the Malaysian youths. Besides, it is also aimed to identify the motivation of the Malaysian youths in travelling to film locations and to explore the potentials of the Malaysian locations in the film industries. The results had showed that the role of the local film locations is still lacking of its effectiveness in driving the Malaysian youths to pay a visit there. The results also showed that the decision making on the travelling destinations among the youth respondents is more likely to be influence by the Internet. For the motivation that will drive the Malaysian student respondents to the local film locations, they are more likely to make a side trip visit during an organised trip. While, for the working youth respondents, their motivation in visiting the local film locations is to see the scenery and landscape that being featured in their favourite film. The popular activity for the respondents to do in the film locations is to take photographs and to share with their family members and friends. There are still possibilities and potentials for local films locations to develop in the film tourism sector.
