Abstract

TARUC has from 15 October 2018 onwards started a new system of marking student attendance through the intranet. Such system is proven to be impractical as students are able to sign their attendance while having coffee in the canteen. For this reason, some lecturers have reverted back to the old manual system of marking attendance. Student attendance in a class is essential to achieve good academic result. In this project, an automatic attendance recording system is proposed to record attendance of student. Each student will have a unique bar code to mark their attendance for every class. There are many automatic systems nowadays which are RFID technology, Barcode technology, Biometric technology and punch card, sign attendance sheet method to record student attendance. TARUC currently is using the most common and traditional method in recording student attendance, its lecturers either call out the student‟s name one by one, or pass an attendance sheet around for the student to sign and collect it at the end of class. Problem occurs when the students sign for another, attendance sheet lost and effort of management generates defaulter list. In order to improve accuracy of attendance, saving time for class conducted, save time and effort in generating defaulter list, improve percentage of student present in the class and hence improve academic result, a bar code based student attendance system is proposed.
