Abstract

High voltage insulators play a major rule in energy transmission systems. The main role of these insulators is to ensure and maintain high level of line-tower insulation. However, the voltage distribution of insulator string is uneven which may easily lead to corona, insulators’ surface deterioration and even flashover. Hence, the calculation of the voltage distribution along them is a very important factor in the operation time. In this paper, 230 kV insulator strings with different types of insulator (porcelain, glass & silicon rubber) were designed and simulated by using SOLIDWORKS and Electric and Magnetic Simulation (EMS) software and their voltage distributions were calculated and compared together. The result shows that different types of insulator strings will not affect the voltage distributions. Insulator with and without tower and conductor were also included in the simulation and the result show that insulator with the tower and conductor are better. Lastly, different number of discs units along the insulator strings also will be investigated and it is clearly show that the less of discs units, the higher the efficiency, however the maximum voltage drop across the discs units will also increase. The research described in this dissertation is directly applicable to the voltage distribution along the high voltage insulators design and development.
