Abstract

The field of ontology design is growing rapidly in the modern information world. Many educators start to implement the concept of ontology for the e-learning process, such as to design course syllabus, organize learning materials and learning styles. The goal for an ontology-driven e-learning system is to design an effective learning path for students to achieve learning goals. Hence, this research examines how ontology-based topic mapping can link different lecture topics together in accordance to their difficulty level and relationship, in order to deliver an appropriate learning sequence for students. There are several features that need to be improved in the proposed system. The prototype available requires a lot of manually inputted data, so improvement need to be done to enhance the system’s ability to read and calculate data automatically. Besides, the result generated by the system needs to be systematized for more readable and understandable. Moreover, new feature to be added to the existing system includes generate sequencing pattern for the course contents based on the result of correlation and clustering. Literature review method is performed throughout the research. After carrying out a thorough searching for relevant papers, all the information is analysed and combined to create a summary of current literature relevant to the research question. Fact gathering techniques such as questionnaire and interview have been used to collect data from respondents regarding the proposed system. Incremental Model is chosen as the software process model during the development of the proposed system. It is appropriate for project that has limited personnel, as well as to shorten the development time. In testing phase, unit testing is conducted for every feature to ensure that each individual feature can work properly before being integrated into the existing module. Then, module testing is carried out to test all the dependent features together. Final system testing involves the testing of the entire system after the various modules have been integrated. In a nutshell, ontology mapping helps to determine the difficulty of course lecture chapters, identify and analyze the relationship between them and group the similar chapters together in order to deliver the course contents effectively to students.
