Abstract

Lighting is a subtle element in the design of any machine vision application. Many had underestimated the complexity of developing a vision system by focusing on designing an advance inspection algorithm with little emphasis in lighting configuration. However, when it comes to field test of the proof-of-concept machine for wiper arms surface, there are many challenges encountered. This paper mainly focused on acquired an optimum illumination condition for wiper arm surface defect detection. Choosing the right lighting can make significant difference in the efficiently of one’s inspection system. Therefore, a novel lighting system such as semi-ring illumination lighting system is designed to overcome the difficulties of defect inspection on a highly reflective surface (HSR) inspection object, for example: car wiper arm surface. Several state-of-arts illumination techniques and methods are also presented in this paper to provide uniform lighting for car wiper arm inspection system to have better image acquisition. Moreover, the lighting system is also aim to help maximize the image contrast between flawless area and defective area and minimize unwanted signals such as dust and dirt. Thus, this will eventually facilitate more accurate, reliable and productive machine vision applications and lower down the complexity of system algorithm.
