Abstract

This project uses an audio signal to modulate a 40 kHz ultrasound source to achieve audio communication and remote control purposes. The performance of ultrasound communication was studied by using different techniques for modulation. Items such as maximum power consumption, transmission distance, depth of modulation, quality of recovered signals and effect of obstacles on transmission range under different modulation techniques are evaluated and compared so as to develop a reliable, robust, efficient and affordable ultrasonic system for short range communication and remote control. The advantage of using modulated ultrasound waves for communication over communication using laser beam/LED light is that unlike laser beam/LED light, ultrasound waves can pass through obstacles and penetrate rain. Communication using modulated ultrasound waves is suitable for short range communication such as traffic light control, auto-gate control and underwater communication where the use of radio waves failed (absorbed by water).
