Abstract

This dissertation explains the use of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology in a real-time indoor positioning system. To evaluate the performance of the system, various experiments are carried out in different areas such as the small-scale arenas and large scale-arenas. The experiments are also carried out in both arenas under both LOS and NLOS conditions. The rapid development of technology has shown a localization system is important to track and for safety and security. The UWB technology offers better performance in a localization system as it is robust and accurate with an accuracy down to 10cm. The UWB technology also has a larger bandwidth and lower power requirement compared to other radio-based technologies. This dissertation also explains various topologies for localization in detail. The main focus of this dissertation is on the single-sided two way ranging (SS-TWR) which is under the time of arrival (ToA) approach. In the actual testing phase, the proposed real-time indoor positioning system is evaluated in the small-scale arena and large-scale arena. Both arenas are tested under both LOS and NLOS conditions. The results show that the system provides the best performance in an open area with the least percentage error, only 1% of percentage error and performs the worst in an environment with obstacles in a small area with percentage error as high as 60%. A larger area is much better than smaller as the error produced is relatively small compared to the large area.
