Abstract

Light Detection and Ranging, also known as LiDAR is a perception sensor known for its versatility in various applications. This study identifies the performance and limitations of a LiDAR sensor besides employing it on a two-wheeled motored vehicle for obstacle anticipation and detection. Motivated by the astoundingly high rate of motorcycle fatalities in the country, this study is done with hopes of reducing them, mainly by introducing a driver assistance safety system. The safety system comprises of a microcontroller, LiDAR sensor and servo motor as its main components. This study applies an algorithm which processes different frames captured by the sensor to allow the identification of obstacle dynamics. The functionality and working conditions of the LiDAR sensor had been tested and its affecting parameters were subsequently observed and resolved. Besides, the efficiency of the integrated LiDAR system was also identified and was proven to be working under both controlled environment and on road tests. Early testing had shown that the system successfully warn motorcyclist on the potential hazard up the road and is ready for further modifications.
