Abstract

The aim of this study was to observe the effect of 6 weeks medicine ball training to improve upper body strength, football throwing distance and velocity of recreational football player. A total of 30 recreational male football player with mean age of 21±1.912 years old, height of 173.16±7.526 cm and weight of 64.96±12.685 kg were recruited in this study. The experimental group (n=15) participated in the medicine ball training for 6 week which was an additional training program conducted before the regular football training session, whereas the control group (n=15) only participated in the regular football training session. The analysis of the result were done using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The performance of the upper body strength, football overhead throwing distance and velocity was test at pre and post training testing. The experimental group who participated in the 6 week medicine ball training showed significant improvement in football overhead throwing velocity compared to control group (p=0.000). For football overhead throwing distance, the experimental group showed significant different from pre-test to post-test mean score compared to control group (p=0.000). The upper body strength also improved significantly (p=0.011) for experimental group compared to control group. The outcome of the result suggested that the additional of medicine ball training in the regular football training was able to have a positive impact on the football overhead throwing velocity and distance. Apart from that, it also can improve the athlete’s upper body strength.
