Abstract

Balance and jumping ability are essential to improve daily living activity and functional capacity in tasks among young adults. This study was to compare the effects of 6-week aquatic and land-based plyometric training programmes on vertical jump height and balance in college students. A total of 14 college students (age = 18.71 ± 4.80, height = 163.04 ± 9.33, weight = 52.05 ± 9.74) participated in this study. All subjects were randomly assigned into aquatic (n = 7) and land-based (n = 7) plyometric group using fishbowl method and undergone 6 weeks of plyometric training program in different environment setting. The training was conducted twice a week on non-consecutive days. Subjects were tested on vertical jump, standing stork test and four square step test to observe the changes in vertical jump height, static balance and dynamic balance. Results showed that there were significant improvements in vertical jump height (p = 0.017), static balance (p = 0.049) and dynamic balance (p = 0.001) in aquatic plyometric group after 6-week plyometric training while land-based plyometric group only showed significant improvement in static balance (p = 0.007). However, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) observed between aquatic and land-based plyometric group in pre-test and post-test results. Therefore, 6-week of plyometric training in aquatic setting can be beneficial for college students to improve vertical jump height, static and dynamic balance.
