Abstract
E-tendering is one of the information technology tools that have been highlighted by construction industry professional to assist in changing the industry‟s culture and improving its processes. It can provide efficiency savings in terms of cost and time, improved security information, improved the speed of communication, environmental friendly and convenience due to „paperless‟ process, better transparency in e-tendering process, and improved accuracy as well as elimination of arithmetical errors to produce higher quality of works. However the emergence and adoption of e-tendering in Malaysian construction industry has been very slow. This research has study the possibility of adoption and implementation e-tendering system in Malaysian construction sector and aim to increase the awareness level and knowledge of Malaysia construction parties regarding on e-tendering. Where the research objectives of this study are to identify the benefits of e-tendering, investigate the reasons that make construction parties in Malaysia refuse to adopt and implement e-tendering and determine whether they are ready to adopt e-tendering, and to provide suggestions and recommendations to make construction parties become more interested to e-tendering system. To achieve the objectives of the research, literature review was done, and a portal questionnaire survey was chosen for construction parties in Malaysia. The questionnaire survey involved 60 respondents from Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and illustrated in table form as well as bar chart. It was found that only 23.3% of the respondents were involved in etendering. Besides that, it was also revealed that the most significant benefits were environmental friendly and convenience due to „paperless‟ process and the main reasons that hinder the construction parties were the lack of awareness level in senior management level and high investment cost on e-tendering. Moreover, a list of xii recommendations and suggestions were also provided under this study to increase the interest level of construction parties towards e-tendering. Training, education and support from upper management level are required for e-tendering to become widely accepted in the future. Furthermore, the research findings are also be discussed in this study. In addition, this research able to contribute the construction industry with better understanding on e-tendering and turn Malaysia to become a technologically advanced country. The implication of study is a need to improve the awareness level of senior management level to ensure a critical mass uptake and maximisation of the benefits of e-tendering in construction. While the next implication of study is the needs to assist the construction players to possess and enhance the knowledge and skills that can make them easier uptake of e-tendering.
