Abstract

This research is aimed to examined how the Facebook can affected the political campaign and election in Malaysia. The 14th General Election (GE14) of 2018 was historic event because this is the first time of the opposition party which is Pakatan Harapan (PH) was gain the victory and success become the ruling government in Malaysia. With the technology advance nowadays, social media has become trendy, cheap and easy to access especially for youths who made up half of the voters totaling 13.3 million. Online mediums such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, news portals and blogs are popular and became the avenues for political parties from both Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) to conduct the political campaign. Both of them are use the social media to shape their image and disseminating the political information in order to gain the attention and supports from the society. Thus, this paper is to study the relationship between the impact of Facebook and Malaysia’s 14th General Election (GE14) and yet explores the conditions and effects of social media in Malaysia. Finally, this article analyses thoroughly the impact of social media in the GE14. Based on overall analysis, the social media is still definitely relevant during election where the election results and the findings of the survey questionnaires are reflecting the influence of social media in Malaysian politics.
