Abstract

One of the main problem faced by car drivers while driving is the uncertainty of the road surface condition. The dangerous road condition can cause unwanted accident which may endanger the safety of the car drivers as well as passengers. Based on research, pothole causes the drivers in United State to spend $15 billion to repair their vehicles and the damaged vehicle could cost the owners spend more than half of their monthly salary for repairing. In Malaysia, police had identify that from year 2000 to 2011, pothole causes 11.2% of road traffic deaths in the overall types of road defects that causes deaths. Therefore, this research project proposed a cost-effective method to detect road surface condition with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system to detect the pothole. In this project, the LiDAR system had been analyzed the functionality of detecting objects in different environments through connecting microcontroller to collect the data through the rangefinder and send to laptop via microcontroller. In this project, the simulation for height of the LiDAR will has different detecting distance between LiDAR and road surface.
