Abstract
Background: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world is facing extraordinary challenges that change our lives. Physical inactivity has become a global concern as there is an increase in death each year that is attributed to this unhealthy lifestyle. Physical activity (PA) is very crucial for building a strong immune system, especially during this pandemic. Thus, it is important to raise awareness of the importance of PA. This study is conducted to investigate the correlation between age, gender, and PA of Malaysian adults, as well as to determine their attitude and knowledge towards PA. Methods: A random stratified sample of 385 Malaysians staying at Kuala Lumpur and Selangor aged 17 years to 55 was interviewed using the official GPAQ. Total physical activity and physical activity in each of the 3 life domains, which are work, transport, and recreation were estimated. PA was expressed as a metabolic equivalent task per week (MET/week). Results: The lowest PA was found in the 40-55 age group (15% of the population meet the recommended MET/week) and the highest in the 17-24 age group (66%). Chi-Square test showed that different physical activity level could not affect the health status of these respondents (p > 0.05). Kruskal-Wallis H test showed a significant relationship of sociodemographic (age range) with MET/week (physical activity) (p < 0.05). Male has a higher physical activity (73%) than female (56%). Mann-Whitney U test showed no association in MET/week among gender (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The findings showed that older people report the lowest physical activity. Proper approaches for elevating physical activity in this age group should be advanced. People who carry out more PA are less likely to develop sickness during the pandemic. Recommendation and knowledge on PA should be emphasized for health purpose.
