Abstract

Background: Foam rolling is a form of self-massage in which the targeted musculature is rolled and compressed utilizing a foam roller device (Peacock et al., 2014). There are few types of foam rollers, for instance, smooth foam rollers and texture/grid foam rollers. Objective: To compare the effectives effectiveness between smooth and textured foam rolling on DOMS and muscle recovery. Method: A comprehensive and structured search of articles were performed using Google scholar, SCOPUS, PubMed and PEDro search engine for studies containing words related to some sets of term (“foam rolling”, “self-myofascial release”, “self-massage”, “muscle recovery”, “muscle damage”, “muscle soreness”, “smooth foam roller”, “textured foam roller” and “delayed onset muscle soreness”) Result: 23 articles met the inclusion criteria. All the included studies were published from 2008 until currently 2021 Conclusion: A textured/grid foam roller may effectively help muscle recovery or reduce DOMS as compared to smooth foam roller. Textured/grid or smooth foam rollers both are showing positive effect on muscle recovery or DOMS but textured/grid foam rollers showing it had higher percentages on result getting reduced DOMS or muscle recovery. However, the quantities of both studies that met the inclusion criterias were not equally so for getting more accuracy results, future research may need to focus on this topic.
