Abstract

When it comes to watching foreign language contents, the audience relies on two most common methods of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) which are dubbing and subtitling. Therefore, this research aims to understand the understanding of viewers towards dubbing and subtitling as well their interpretation towards the content. A total of 12 Malaysian respondents has been selected and divided into 3 respective focus groups to analyse the similarities and differences of understanding the dubbed and subtitled version of Train to Busan (2016). Meanwhile, the reception theory has been applied to this research to see viewers' interpretation towards the content. Based on the results obtained, the majority of the respondents prefer watching the subtitled version as the originality of the content is preserved. Even though there is no significant difference in the interpretation of the content, the majority of the respondents stated that dubbing process towards the original content can change the watching experience and even the genre of the film from thriller to comedy. Nevertheless, both of the Audiovisual Translation (AVT) methods should be appreciated equally as different viewers prefer different methods of understanding the content of a foreign film.
