Abstract

According to the GfK Radio Audience Measurement (2019) stated that over 20.6 million Malaysians listen to radio for average of 13 hours 23 minutes weekly. Malaysia implemented Movement Control Order (MCO) due to the Covid-19 pandemic and it may bring effects on radio listenership, consumption habits and programme preferences of Malaysians. This study is to investigate the dynamic changes on radio listenership, consumption habits and programmes preferences among the higher educational institutions students who are studying in foundation, diploma or bachelor’s degree in the Klang Valley before and during MCO. Results show that the radio listenership has dropped during MCO. Despite a drop, there were changes on the consumption habits where afternoon period listening has become popular during MCO rather than morning period before MCO. Most of the listening happened in the car before MCO while it has changed to in the house during MCO. News and current affairs has become the number one rank among other programmes during MCO. This can be seen as people consume radio for surveillance purpose. They can know the current status, news and information through radio to update what is happening in the world.
